The Manhattan Beach Open will be held this weekend and it is the second tour stop for the AVP in 2013. Even though players do not hit the sand until Friday, the beach volleyball festivities have already begun. The Volleyball Walk of Fame Inductee Ceremony was held this afternoon on the Manhattan Beach Pier to honor the 2012 winners on the women’s and on the men’s side.
The team of Whitney Pavlik/Jenny Kropp-Goess and Sean Scott/John Hyden received their pier plaques and thus further cemented their place in Manhattan Beach volleyball history. Both teams were repeat champions from 2011 and many believed they could make it a three-peat going into 2013.

A lot can change in a little over 12 months, though. Even as a winning combination, which Pavlik/Kropp and Hyden/Scott proved overwhelmingly last year, things change. This MBO, Whitney Pavlik will play with Kerri Walsh Jennings as the number 2 seed. Jon Hyden picked up a new partner in last week’s Salt Lake City event, an up and coming player named Tri Bourne. They will be seeded #12. Jenny Kropp-Goess is expecting twins ( a boy and a girl) and is currently 17 weeks along, so “no volley” for her, at least for now. Jenny can still be heard, though, as the writer in DiG magazine’s “Ten Things You Should Really Know About Beach Volleyball.” Sean Scott has since retired from beach volleyball and has taken a position with USA Volleyball as their Beach Programs Coordinator (National Teams). You might have noticed him during the FIVB Long Beach event this past July coordinating at the event making things run smoothly behind the scenes.
The Manhattan Beach Open begins with qualifiers this Friday and the main draw action starting on Saturday. Here is the link for this year’s qualifier and main draw brackets:
Some other partner notations and/or teams to watch in the main draw include:
Ryan Doherty and Todd Rogers (#3) – Second Place in SLC
Matt Fuerbringer teaming up once again with Casey Jennings (#5)
Matt Olson and Ed Ratledge (#8)
Tim and Brian Bomgren (#23) vs. Billy Allen and Braidy Halverson (#10)
Rachel Scott and Annett Davis (#14)
Traci Morin and Aurora Skarra-Gallagher (#20) vs. Chara Harris and Megan Wallin (#13)
Lauren Fendrick and Brittany Hochevar (#4) – Fresh off their second place finish in SLC.
Dianne DeNecochea and Brooke Niles (#10 )
With so many changes to the beach landscape in the partner category, chances are a relatively new team will take home the MBO 2013 title and thus get their own plaque on the prestigious Manhattan Beach Pier.
